Testing Children:
Dr. Nikki provides testing and services for all ages and was
previously an Audiologist with Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.

Pediatric testing is a little different than adult testing. Testing for pediatrics is very dependent on the age of the child. Testing is performed to test for both hearing acuity and the possibility of ear infections

0-6 months: Otoacoustic Emissions Testing (OAE) where a piece of equipment puts a sound
into the ear and if the ear hears it, it sends a certain sound back to the piece of
equipment. Tympanometry to determine Middle Ear integrity and the presence of
ear infections.

6 mo - 3 yrs: Visual Reinforcement Audiometry (VRA) where the child sits on the parent's lap in
the sound room. Sounds are then played from either the left or right speakers and
the child is reinforced with a lighted toy when he or she looks for the sound.
Sometimes OAEs are also used. Tympanometry is also used (see above).

3 yrs - 5 yrs: Conditioned Play Audiometry (CPA) where the child "plays a game" when he or she
hears the sound. For example, the child is taught to put a block in a bucket when
he or she hears the sound. Tympanometry is also used (see above).

5 yrs plus: Conventional Audiometry - same as adult testing.
